Established in 2003, the Colletivo Design Studio is an independent design firm that creates well-known design projects for branding and identities, digital installations, films, graphic design, products and packing, posters, applications, games, advertising, illustrations, websites, interiors, and books.
The company was officially founded in 2003, but the project started years before, with the gathering of a group of friends in Design graduation, at Anhembi Morumbi University. Marcelo Roncatti, Fabio Couto, Vanessa Queiroz, and David Bergamasco joke that they were the classes’ nerds, the only ones that took all the assignments seriously.
The group did their undergraduate thesis together about Apocalypse Now movie, from the director Francis Ford Coppola. Their good dynamic and friendship at college, as well as their dissatisfaction with the firsts jobs, led to the creation of Colletivo Design Studio.
At first, the company did a lot of clumsy work, but accepted them without any judgment, like a website for digital funerals and the packaging of erotic products. They also attended many fashion brands, including Cavalera, that gave them a lot of freedom to work in the way they thought was best.
The real breakthrough came in 2005, when Brazil Inspired, a website specialized in Brazilian culture, published their portfolio and a brief interview with the owners. That visibility provided their first work with an international projection.
Then the studio was hired to work beside TracyLocke, a promotional agency of the Omnicom group. One of the biggest international projects done along with TracyLocke was a series of illustrations for three Pepsi Max’s packaging, for the Asian market in 2007. These provided the first big contract of the agency, with a 5 million dollar value.
Another important international project that year was the animated jingles for Comedy Central channel.
At first, the company was made only by 4 partners and, nowadays, the team counts with more than 40 employees.
In 2016, when the agency completed 13 years on the market they made an exclusive beer to celebrate. The collection was named Matilha (Pack) and each type of drink received was named after the owners’ dogs, who are always in the office: Geni, Tutu and Bumi.
Two years after that, in celebration to the 15 years of the company, Colletivo did a series of events in 2018 at Casa Idea Fixa. They organized 15 events in a project called “Papo Colletivo” (Colletivo Chat), that lasted until November 2019 and engaged guests who inspired the creative community. Beyond lectures, the events also made it possible for the people to interact, stimulating dialogues and connections between them. All the editions were free and allowed 15 spots for those who were interested.
Colletivo is an office specialized in Design and all its developments. So, the company provides services directly for brands or through advertising or digital content agencies, having an experience with big important projects in Brazil and worldwide. In the services category of Branding, Colletivo provides the conception of names, brand positioning, visual identity construction, and packaging.
In Digital, the company builds websites, mobile versions, apps, games, mapping, interaction, and digital installations. For Graphic Design and Illustration many types of products are developed, like printed and digital materials, packaging, signaling, typography, campaign illustrations, and posters.
Some successful cases are the illustrations of Havaiana’s global campaign and Caboré Awards’. The development of Orange Is the New Black and Better Call Saul mobile games, the mapping of Casa Flora and Opening WME, in 2019 and 2018, posters for the Mountain Dew Summer Games, the branding of TEDx Campos de Jordão, all aspects of the wine Villa D’Ancora’s branding development, Nike Canarinho’s campaign, Colorado Ribeirão Lager packaging and the Nickelodeon’s award posters and design.
Feeling some needs and opportunities on the market, Colletivo decided to transform some services categories into other agencies. Moonstro is responsible for the production of content for websites, apps, and social media. BattleLab is the technology and innovation vein of Colletivo, that makes websites, apps and games development.
Colletivo has a partnership with IdeaFixa, a company of special projects and contents.
Colletivo Design Office is located at Casa IdeaFixa, a very casual and relaxed space. The company really worries about the quality of the work environment and, because of that, their office is a house with an open backyard. The division of space is informal and not fixed, without any stalls or established seats. The employees are allowed to bring their dogs to play in the backyard and unwind the place.
They also count on a wonderful Chef, who prepares the lunch every day.
Besides that, the company works with strategic methods, supporting the team to truly understand the client’s business model, diagnose the real problem to be handled and propose the best visual solution to that, so it creates a better experience between the brand and its clients. In Colletivo design is taken seriously.
The agency doesn’t do any work in Photoshop without having a draft in paper first. Their essence is to keep the process of creating organic, without strict planning about creativity.
The planning, development, and delivery of contents for websites, apps, and social media became so big for Colletivo that they decided to start another company, focused exclusively in this area: the Moonstro agency, with clients like Impala, Grants, and Visa. The main motto of the company is that only relevant content is able to generate real talks between people and brands. The agency acts as a bridge between these two, being the link that connects brands with how it wants to be represented to the public through the internet. In order to deliver that, the agency searches to understand who the public is and what’s the better way to talk with it. In all cases, Moonstro recommends a share with real people, in a way to humanize the content that will be better received and give better results.
The services are provided in 9 main categories: the first one is the Diagnosis, in which the agency immerses in the client’s and target’s worlds, in order to identify the best strategy for the project. After identifying the gaps, starts the phase of Strategic Planning, that can focus on visual identity, digital tactics or positioning, and construction of the brand. The stage of Tactical Planning handles the best tools to create those solutions. The next phase is Humanized Social Content that uses planning and tools in order to create personalized and creative content that is capable of communicating the brand’s purpose and starting a relevant conversation with the target public. For Content Production, the agency creates videos and images that really concretize the brand’s purpose, strategy, and communication, suitable for the goals of each client. The following step is Visual Solution with Design DNA, which uses the expertise of being part of Colletivo to create contents that transform strategies in design. In Empathetic Monitoring, the agency deals with communication in a humanized way that creates a bonding with the public. The Business Intelligence step realizes daily monitoring to analyze the results, measure and adapt, by applying strategic investments in content and platforms, searching for the best outcome, since media strategy to Inbound Marketing. Lastly, the Relationship with Influencers is fundamental for a consistent presence on the media. Are taken into consideration not only the numbers but also the authority of the influencer in the subject or field.
