EXPANDED and UPDATED to include new sections on Next JS and Server-Side Rendering!

Welcome to the best online resource for learning React! Published in April 2019, this course is brand new and covers the latest in React.  This course follows the exact same React curriculum my in-person bootcamp students follow in San Francisco, where students have gone on to get jobs at places like Google, Apple, Pinterest, & Linkedin.  This is the most polished React course online, and it’s the only course that is based on REAL bootcamp curriculum that has been tried and tested in the classroom.

This course builds up concepts one at a time, cementing each new topic with an expertly designed exercise or project to test your knowledge. It includes a huge variety of beautiful exercises, projects, and games that we create together from scratch.  Sometimes we mix things up and give you a broken React app and ask you to fix it or optimize the code. Check out the promo video to see a couple of the course exercises. The course culminates in one huge capstone project, which is the largest project I’ve ever built for any of my online courses.  I’m really excited about it 🙂

React is the most popular JS library around, and there’s never been a better time to learn it! Companies all over the world are turning to React to help manage their JavaScript chaos, including tech giants like Facebook, Airbnb, and Uber.  React is consistently voted the most loved and most wanted front-end framework by developers, and it’s clear why! React is a joy to use, and it makes writing maintainable and modular JavaScript code a breeze.

If you’re new to frameworks, React is the ideal first framework to learn. It’s easy enough to learn the basics, but it doesn’t teach you bad habits. Even if you’ve already enrolled in another React course, this course is worth your time for the exercises and projects alone!  This curriculum is the product of two years of development and iteration in the bootcamp classroom.   All the lectures, exercises, and projects have been tweaked and improved based on real student feedback. You won’t find anything else online as structured and polished as this course.

The highlights:

  • Learn React, from the very basics up to advanced topics like Next JS, React Router, Higher Order Components and Hooks and the Context API.
  • Build one massive capstone application, complete with drag & drop, animations, route transitions, complex form validations, and more.
  • Learn the latest in React, including Hooks (my favorite part of React!).  We build a complete app using Hooks, including multiple custom hooks.
  • Learn state management using the useContext and useReducer hooks, to mimic some of the functionality of Redux.
  • You get tons of detailed handouts and cheatsheets that you can refer back to whenever you need to.   Think of this as a React textbook you can study at any point if you get tired of videos.

What you get:

  • 250+ videos
  • Slick, interactive slide decks custom made for each section
  • Detailed handouts and cheatsheets, the React “textbook”.
  • Dozens of exercises, projects, and quizzes.
  • One massive code-along project with nearly 20 different React components.
  • Free Webpack Mini Course!

Who this course is for:

  • Anyone brand new to React or front-end frameworks in general
  • Anyone who wants to build a portfolio of stunning React apps
  • Students struggling to learn React or looking for more practice
  • Anyone who wants to level up their developer skills and learn a highly in-demand skill!

This was another outstanding and in-depth course by Colt Steele, my review would be a full 5 stars but this particular course hasn’t been updated in a while which is understandable. As of Nov 2021 this course is still relevant but there are some as of yet minor issues that arise due to there being a newer version of React but nothing prohibitively so.

Awesome course! I really liked Colt’s teaching methods, really helped me understand a lot of important concepts! Thanks heaps! p.s. hope Colt can do a course on react native I’d definitely enroll for that course 😉

It’s good material but outdated. There are a few sections were you have to bang your head against documentation (like a real developer) to figure out the new way of doing things. Luckily, most of it still relevant and Colt is a great teacher. I would still recommend this do those getting started with React. I came from Colt’s web developer bootcamp (which is a 5 star course) and highly recommend this as a follow-up.

Update: I actually increased my rating because after a few weeks of working on my own projects with React, I realize that Colt was very thorough in his teaching. Things may be outdated but the logic, reasoning, and high level philosophy are all great in this course. I still think it could use an update but it merits me boosting a rating from 3.5 to 4.5 stars.

Great course, but some content is out to date, leading to deprecated code and outdated installation procedures of some of the technologies shown. But great overall.

Well, that was quite a journey! I wanna wholeheartedly thank Colt for this amazing course, I’ve been working as a React dev for a little bit before I’ve decided to take this course, and I wanna say that IT. WAS. WORTH. IT. Every minute. I’ve got so much knowledge, everything is clear and well-explained, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude. I can proudly say that after this two weeks I’ve become a better React developer than I was, for sure. Thank you, Colt! See you soon on data structures course 😉

Very Good Course with detailed explanations. But some of the course contents is outdated. Udemy shouldn’t fool us by changing the updated date. Other wise Colt is a very good instructor to rely on for web development.

Excellent course, I just hoped it had the styling sections more separated from the rest. Sometimes it just gets in the way of learning new things, and not being nicely separated from the rest makes it hard to skip these parts.

Way too much time spent on class based components and not enough on functional components and hooks.

Good course, but a little dated. Took a while trying to use more modern versions of various technologies

Great course! Learn by doing his many mini projects and exercises and he explains things clear and makes them easy to understand. Sometimes hard to find a good balance of lecture and exercises and I feel he nails it. Would love for Colt to do an Angular or Spring course as well!

This course is surely recommended for React beginners. It covers a lot of Javascript/component patterns and good practices, so that projects’ code meet good performance and readability scores.

The only negative side I felt is, the NextJS part was a bit short and outdated, although it covers most of the basics. I tried myself to convert the react-colors-app into a NextJS app, and integrate with @emotion/styled and @storybook, but I found some issues difficult to handle as the SSR part wasn’t the focus of this course.
